Developed strategy, message and comprehensive Communication & Outreach Plan for Sempervirens Fund to drive their capital campaign and long-term fundraising success. Implemented the plan in partnership with the land trust's staff, board and volunteers to protect California redwoods. Created new website and print materials.
Developed statewide outreach campaign to engage the California horticulture industry and home gardeners in phasing out invasive plants. Gained media coverage from San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, NPR and more. Now, most California nurseries don’t sell PlantRight’s list of invasive plants, and industry procedures are in place to prevent the introduction of new problem plants.
California Institute for Biodiversity
Created message and marketing plan for Cal-Alive! multimedia environmental science program. Wrote fundraising appeals and other materials that brought new funders and partners such as California State Parks.
Flex Your Power
Managed new initiatives for Flex Your Power – California’s statewide public education campaign for energy and water efficiency that motivates residents, businesses and institutions to pay attention and change their behavior. Projects included: statewide campaign plan for water conservation; local government outreach strategy; web content; email marketing; conference programming; and grant writing.
Brake Pad Legislative Partnership
Supported the environmental community to eliminate harmful copper from vehicle brake pads through balanced legislation. Provided a communication strategy, lobbying materials and media outreach that helped power their bill through Sacramento’s political logjam and resulted in a new law that met the coalition's objectives.
Bay Nature Magazine
As Associate Publisher, inspired and educated Bay Area residents to connect with the natural world around them. Put the new magazine on sustainable business footing through bottom-line responsiblity for strategy and planning, marketing and outreach, fundraising, direct mail, operations, financial management and staffing -- while shaping the magazine into a beautiful, influential and beloved publication.
To launch new commercial solar company, developed market positioning, message, marketing strategy, website and trade show materials that landed important new clients. Wrote white papers and blog entries published by TriplePundit and GreenBiz.
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
To involve top corporate event planners in Fairmont's eco leadership globally, created a Harvest Dinner (including renowned experts and a complimentary onsite farmers market). Doubled attendance over previous year and accelerated Green progress in the company and the hospitality industry.
Created strategic marketing program, online ads and highly successful partnership program for junk mail reduction service that attracted premier partners such as Audubon, Outward Bound, Grist and Habitat for Humanity chapters. Earned media coverage from The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, television, radio, websites and blogs.
Developed programming and business plan that brought this national environmental radio program to a wider mainstream audience. Structured corporate sponsorships and nonprofit partnerships (such as NRDC and Union of Concerned Scientists).
Bank of America – Government Relations
Developed public policy positions and communication materials to address a vast array of banking, economic and environmental issues (e.g., water, smart growth, toxics). Co-authored BofA’s Environmental Principles and served on senior-level Environmental Team to implement them.
Launched communications program to showcase the organization’s collaborative, business-friendly model and on-the-ground results, and to support fundraising. Created outcome-driven marketing plans for each project, which expanded California-sourced biofuels, reduced water contamination from auto dismantlers, and enabled private landowners to restore wildlife habitat cost-effectively. Earned prime media coverage (e.g., The Today Show, KQED-TV’s Quest, Michael Krasny’s Forum) and contributed to double-digit increases in funding, staffing and program results. Successful program was extended for 7 years with my guidance.
Metropolitan Transportation Commission
Led five-agency team to launch new Bay Area transit and traffic information service (predecessor to 511) with advertising and public relations to increase transit use.
